Luxembourg vs Northern Ireland: prediction & betting odds 4 September 2025

The Matchday 5 World Cup 2026 qualifier between Luxembourg and Northern Ireland will take place on September 4 at Stade de Luxembourg. Luxembourg vs. Northern Ireland: prediction and betting odds, statistics.

Luxembourg

In the previous qualifiers, the team finished fourth in Group A. Luxembourg won 3 matches and suffered 5 defeats, surpassing only Azerbaijan in the standings. Notably, two of their three victories were against this opponent. However, Luxembourg conceded in both encounters with Azerbaijan, and in their last 10 World Cup qualifiers, they kept a clean sheet only once. The team's last Nations League campaign was also disappointing, as Luxembourg finished last in Group C.

In August, Jeff Strasser, who has nearly 100 caps for the national team, took over as head coach.

  • At least three goals were scored in 6 of Luxembourg's last 7 World Cup qualifiers.
  • The team has not won in 8 of their last 10 home matches in this tournament (1 draw, 7 defeats).
  • Luxembourg scored in 5 of their last 7 home World Cup qualifiers.

Predicted lineup for Luxembourg (4-5-1)

Anthony Moris – Laurent Jans, Florian Bohnert, Dirk Carlson, Enes Mahmutovic – Danel Sinani, Leandro Barreiro, Mathias Olesen, Seid Korac, Olivier Thill – Yvandro Borges.

Forward Gerson Rodrigues was not called up to the squad by the local federation's decision.

Northern Ireland

In the last qualifiers, the team finished third in Group C, behind Italy and Switzerland. Northern Ireland defeated Lithuania twice (3 draws, 3 losses) and trailed the second place by 7 points. Notably, the team scored only 6 goals and failed to score in five matches during this period. However, Northern Ireland had a more successful Nations League campaign than Luxembourg, finishing first in their group and earning promotion to League B.

  • At least one opponent failed to score in 9 of Northern Ireland's last 11 World Cup qualifiers.
  • The team has not scored more than one goal in 5 of their last 6 away matches in this tournament.
  • Northern Ireland has not won in 5 of their last 6 away World Cup qualifiers (1 draw, 4 defeats).

Predicted lineup for Northern Ireland (4-4-2)

Bailey Peacock-Farrell – Brodie Spencer, Conor Bradley, Trai Hume, Daniel Ballard – Ethan Galbraith, Shea Charles, George Saville, Isaac Price – Dion Charles, Callum Marshall.

Defender Paddy McNair has left the squad due to injury.

Luxembourg vs. Northern Ireland: Match Prediction

The teams were opponents in the last Nations League. Northern Ireland secured a 2-0 victory at home, while in Luxembourg, the match ended in a 2-2 draw. In that encounter, both teams displayed an uncharacteristic level of scoring. In the upcoming match, I do not expect a repeat of such a goal fest.

Luxembourg struggled in attack during the 2024/25 Nations League, despite their group lacking strong teams. The team managed to score in only two of their six matches. In World Cup qualifiers, Luxembourg has not been prolific even at home: in 9 of their last 10 matches, they have not scored more than one goal.

Five of Northern Ireland's six goals in the last qualifiers were against Lithuania. The away match with the Baltic side, won 4-1, stands out from their other results. It was the only match in Northern Ireland's last 6 away World Cup qualifiers where they scored more than once. Moreover, in 4 matches during this period, the team failed to score entirely.

My prediction: Total under 2.5 goals

Betting tips 4 September 2025

Less than a year on, they meet again: last autumn Luxembourg and Northern Ireland were fighting for promotion to League B of the UEFA Nations League. Northern Ireland came out on top.

Northern Ireland won the group, helped by four points from their two meetings with Luxembourg — (2:0 and 2:2). The draw came in the final round, a result that suited Northern Ireland. This spring and summer they were tested in friendlies against Scandinavian national teams and Switzerland. The warm-ups largely went well. Only Sweden inflicted a heavy 5:1 defeat on them. Against the rest there was parity: W1 D1 L1 (GF 3, GA 3).

Luxembourg sparkled in UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying, pushing Slovakia hard for second place. For the first time in their history they registered five wins in a single qualifying campaign. However, after falling short in the play-offs their results dipped. That has been most evident in the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League — no wins in six matches, bottom of League C and a return to the bottom tier, League D. In the June friendlies, Luxembourg came close to stopping two strong opponents — Slovenia (0:1) and Republic of Ireland (0:0). It looked as if things were stabilising, but in August Luc Holtz stepped down after 15 years to pursue an opportunity in German club football.

Luxembourg  are now led by Jeff Strasser, a local icon with 98 caps, who has yet to make his debut, so it is unclear how quickly his ideas will take root. Northern Ireland look the steadier proposition and we are confident they will take at least a point from Luxembourg, but we expect a low-scoring game.
